Watch and Clock Dial Refinishing in Delhi
A dial is the face of the thing. It is also the part most easily ruined. We refinish watch dials and clock dials in Delhi, and we will tell you honestly when the right answer is to leave yours alone.
The decision comes before the work
Refinishing an antique dial is a choice with consequences, and it is yours to make, not ours. Collectors value an original surface, even a tired one. Light patina, an even honey tone, faint spotting: these read as history. Once a dial is stripped and reprinted, that evidence is gone for good and cannot be put back. Against that, a dial with lifting paint or advancing corrosion may be losing detail every year it waits. We lay out both sides, show you what we would do, and wait for your decision.
Watch dials, under the loupe
Watch dials are small and unforgiving. Printing must sit at the right weight, indices must be seated square, and the feet must be sound or the dial will shift on the movement. We work on quartz, mechanical and vintage watch dials, including luxury pieces, and the first step is always a close look under magnification to see what is really happening under the crystal. Sometimes the marks are on the crystal, not the dial. Sometimes a gentle clean is enough. Where a full refinish is right, the layout and typography are matched to the original.
Clock dials, painted and brass
Clock dials come in several kinds and each asks for different handling. Painted iron dials craze and flake, usually starting in the corners and around the winding holes. Enamel chips. Brass dials tarnish, and their silvered chapter rings dull to grey, which is a finish that can often be renewed without touching the engraving. Chapter ring numerals, signature and spandrels all carry information about the clock, so we photograph and record before anything is disturbed. Matching hands are checked at the same time, since a refinished dial behind wrong hands still looks wrong.
About dial refinishing
Will a refinished dial look obviously new?
It should not shout. The aim is a dial that reads correctly for the piece: right typeface, right spacing, right depth of colour, and a surface that does not glare next to an aged case and hands. That said, a refinished dial is a refinished dial, and any experienced buyer will recognise one. We say so before we start.
I want to sell the watch later. Should I refinish now?
Usually not. If the dial is stable and simply aged, leave it. Buyers of vintage watches often pay more for an honest original surface than for a fresh one, and the choice stays open for whoever owns it next. Refinish when the dial is actively deteriorating, or when you plan to keep and wear the piece yourself.
Can you work on the dial without me sending the whole clock?
For a longcase or a heavy wall clock, yes. We can visit, remove the dial and hands correctly, and take only what needs to come, leaving the case and movement in place. For watches we prefer to see the complete watch, since the dial, hands and movement must be fitted and checked together. We cover Delhi-NCR.
